DotPass is an app for iOS (iPad/iPhone) and Mac OS X that offers a different approach to passwords, and works as an alternative or complement to all the millions of popular password manager apps out there.
It works like this:
- You enter a graphical pattern by connecting the dots as seen in the screenshots, this is your secret, and what you need to remember.
- You then enter a seed word, for example "facebook" or "twitter".
- Based on the combination of the pattern and seed word DotPass returns a password for you to use for this account.
As long as you enter the same pattern and seed word, you always get the same password. This means that you can use DotPass to get your passwords back any time you need them, without them being saved anywhere on your device or in the cloud. This also means that there is no data anywhere that can be stolen or lost.
As you enter the pattern, the background colour gradient also changes, so that each pattern also has a specific color. This is to make it easier to remember the pattern and to recognize it when you enter it again.
Afte you've entered your pattern and seed word, you can just tap the presented password to copy it, so you can paste it in where you need to use it.
If you are worried about people looking over your shoulder, there are setting to hide the seed word and pattern after entry.
