CLIENT BRIEF

Charles Bennet is 56 years old. He has a bakery. It is a family business. He has a wife and 2 sons and a daughter.

His dream was to have his own bakery. He started working in a bakery 35 years ago. He never went to a college or university, however he started taking lessons from a course in his town and his passion for bread was supported by his parents. He has been a strong athletic person all his life.

He is a calm and loving father, enjoying a relaxing evening playing with his nephews. His wife, Betty, helps him with managing the bakery . His 2 sons, Steve and Richard, are working at the bakery as chefs, both having the same passion for bread as their father. His daughter, Marry, is more interested in studying law and Charles supports her to achieve her dream to become a lawyer.

Charles is a morning person. He wakes up every morning just to cook some bread and have it with some butter, tomatoes and salt and a tea. He has his own garden that takes care as well outside Cambridge in Waterbeach. He sometimes brings some of his own vegetables to the bakery just for the display in a basket with a few slices of fresh bread. He has a dog and likes fishing.

He likes honest materials. He has a traditional house and traditional furniture but he accepts anything that is contemporanic if it is well made. He likes warm colours and he prefers home made style of cooking, with the traditional oven and stone floor like the kitchen he grown up in. He always had a passion for stars and glowing things, so the way light is displayed is an important thing.

He is open to his sons suggestions about the bakery how they can improve and make the business run better and was always fascinated by the crazy designs he that you can get these days. Charles is a responsible person, and he is happy with what he achieved in his life until now. He does what he loves and loves what he does taking care of his family and having his dream happen, so he will be open to any ideas that will improve the business so his family can have more resources.

CONCEPT

DESIGN STATEMENT

I am asked to design a three floor interior (basement, ground floor, first floor) on Green Street in Cambridge. The purpose to this space is to become a bakery for my client, Charles Bennet. His dream was to own a bakery and I am about to help him get what he wants from these place.

Because Charles is a traditional person but also opened to any type of suggestions from his sons in order to improve his business I am going to use this opportunity to combine traditional with contemporary style.

When Charles is going to work he takes a basket with vegetables. His basket is where my concept started, and wicker is the concept. In order to make the place exciting I am going create big branches from the wicker going through first and second floor (the place open to the public) raising the scale of the branches, dramatically. The branches will influence the walls, furniture and the way people are going to use the space. Also because the branches from the wicker are curved, I am going to make the place and furniture fluid and curvy.

The external walls are going to be made by glass and the branches will go through it. The branches will be hold by a fixture so it won’t damage in time and will be made of metal like other details on the bakery.

The floor is going to be made of stone because this is the way Charles use to have home and it also is touch of traditional. I am going to use underground heating. For this heating I am going to use a wet system. The fire used for cooking is going to have two tasks and one of them is heating the water for heating the whole place. Because they have a limited budged to maintain the place, this option is very useful.

The furniture is going to be made of wood, leather and metal. The sitting is going to have brick red color, so it will be in contrast with the light timber that I am going to use for the branches and the other part of the furniture and stairs. The metal is going to be used for small details like branches fixtures, chair stability part, display and tables. The walls are going to be made of white painted brick.

The basement purpose is to be used as a cooking and storage area, and toilet. I am going to put a glass floor at the entrance (outside sitting area) of the bakery on the ground floor so the people passing by or the clients can see how the bread is being cooked. The ground floor is going to have a small outside sitting area where you can get a take away from the window placed next to this area.

The window is curved and wide so it will easy to see. The ground floor will also have an inside sitting area, a display area and the place to buy the items. Besides bread, the clients will also be able to order tea, pretzels and croissants. The stairs are going to be placed in the middle of the space and it will be spiral made of wood and the railing is going to be made by thin straight branches. The first floor is also going to be a sitting area, inside and outside.

The combination of traditional and contemporary style in Charles bakery will make the place become and exiting place to work, sit in and to look at. I am convinced that these decisions are going to fulfill my client wishes, improve the place and his business and the maintenance of the area.
