BURN - A photographic happening book

Let’s burn what we hate, what is bad or something which has a negative meaning for us.
Let’s burn! Let’s the flames begin, but with brain.

BURN is a 2 parts photographic happening book:
a Pars Destruens and a Pars Costruens.

First I show you something burning, this is the Pars Destruens, the funny and more "artistic" part, then I explain why I decided to burn this kind of things and from the ashes I build the particular meaning of the happening for the Pars Costruens.

Everything starts with a BRUXELLES SPROUT. A classic.
Why did I burn it?
It’s been claimed that a particular mutated gene, which is present in about half of the world’s population, decides whether or not we will like sprouts. People with the mutation are said not to taste their bitterness caused by a bitter chemical similar to PTC (Phenylthiocarbamide).

BROCCOLIS
People who hate Bruxelles sprouts hate broccolis too. The reason is always the same:
the gene hTAS2R38 is responsable to help the human beings to avoid harmful plant toxins.
So we may vary in our taste for vegetables thanks to some reasons which have nothing
to do with tasting.

BURNING BRA
During the 1960’s, women started protesting for equal rights, they burned their bras to fight for Women’s Rights and because it was the symbol of chauvinist and sexist society of that time.

MATHS
According to a new study, the mere prospect of a math problem causes pain centers to light up in number-phobic brains. When math-phobes see a math task coming, their dorso-posterior insulas and mid-cingulate cortexes (the parts of the brain wich perceive pain and bodily threats)
react as they feel true physical pain

BARBIE
A well-dressed doll or a bad role model? Barbie is sold by 1959, but she changed her look
and her attitude during the 20th century. She should represents the “perfect woman”
and she makes young girls dream to be physically beautiful. But the “perfect woman” doesn’t exist and she is just a product symbol of a chauvinist state of mind.

PS. Yes, the barbie was one of mine.

And last but not least: JUNK FOOD.
Highly available and affordable, it may seem attractive to anyone hoping to save time and money, but it slows the body down. It offers too many calories and unhealthful ingredients that contribute to being overweight. Obesity is the plague of the 21st century. In USA 35.7 percent of adults and 16.9 percent of children age 2 to 19 are obese, as the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) reported.

SOME DETAILS AND LEARNINGS
Burn veggies is not that easy, Bruxelles sprouts and broccolis are stronger than alcohol, gasoline and gunpowder put them all togheter.

When you shoot a "burning project" you have just one chance to get the perfect picture, so be organised, design the set narrowly and... avoid to do it during a windy freezing night.

A good camera and right settings are essential, but post-production too.

If you enjoy seeing a barbie burning, you like this project!
