talk to me better: giving signals

Pratt Institute, New York, USA

For my thesis exploration, I am investigating how to improve remote communication; particularly for collaboration over video conferencing. I am also trying to have fun with it. This set of experiments use signals as a tool for better communication.

The hoods/helmets/fortresses of solitude (above and below) instantly create a private space for conversation. The sound of the speakers' pulse would be amplified into the hood, so emotional states could easily be tracked. Lights could also be used to create mood, or give indication of agitation, etc.
I also explored using colored flags to indicate the comfort level within a conversation (above).

And I experimented with using signs, movement, and shifted focus to facilitate conversation over video chat (below). I'm still searching for a solution.
