‘A World Without Bread’ - TV Commercial

Client: Warburton’s

Writer: Amy Govan & Harrison Field

Date: 28/12/2014

Title: A world without bread

Length: 90 seconds

(Bread is a product that we all take for granted. This video will show just how much of a necessity bread is on a daily basis by portraying a world without it, highlighting just how dysfunctional and messy we would become.)

Throughout this video it will concentrate on one family adapting to life without bread. The mother and older son think nothing of a world without bread however her husband and younger sons are shocked and confused when presented with food, normally eaten with bread, but now no longer being given it.

The first clip will consist of close up shots and familiar sounds that we all experience over breakfast, the bubbling of beans on the stove, crackling of bacon and whistle of the kettle.

We see a close up of a woman’s feet in slippers running up a dimly lit flight of stairs, knocking lightly on a bedroom door she slowly prises it open. Her son is in bed, quietly approaching him she places a plate of food next to him, brushing his cheek she opens his curtain, waking him. Leaving the room her son sits up in bed turning to the plate of food; cream cheese, bacon and maple syrup with no bread, confused and unsure what to do with the food he places the plate back down, groans and pulls the covers back over his head.

The woman is now back in her open plan kitchen and dinning room, the table is set for breakfast; her youngest son (7years old) is seated at the head of the table when her oldest son (17years old) and his girlfriend join him.

The woman places a dippy egg in front of her youngest boy without the soldiers, really confused he looks around the plate, lifting it up and moving the egg cup from side to side, he looks up at his mother who ruffles his hair, smiles sweetly and walks away.

Her husband then enters the room in a suit and tie, briefcase in hand the woman passes him his lunch, kissing her on the cheek he then leaves for work.

The woman then gives her oldest son a plate of buttered sausages smothered in tomato ketchup and his girlfriend a plate of beans on top of a thick layer of butter. The girl sits awkwardly, tapping her fingers on the table where cutlery should be placed. Looking across the table her boyfriend shrugs and attempts to eat with his hands, smothering himself in grease and ketchup, the girl looks at him horrified.

As the woman pulls back a seat placing herself at the table her husband enters back into the kitchen holing a bag of layered ham, cucumber and cheese cut into triangles, followed by the woman’s second son who has brought the food down that was left by his bed.

The woman is about to take a big bite into weetabix covered in butter and marmite when she looks up to see her frozen family all staring at her inquisitively and confused.

Looking at her husband and seeming as though she’s just been enlightened about the family’s confusion she raises her hands to the ceiling, shakes her head and laughs to herself.

The toaster pops and everyone looks relieved.

Lifting some very toasted gloves from the machine she places them in her husband’s hand

The woman: ‘Almost forgot’ sitting back at the table and taking a massive bite out of her breakfast concoction she questions ‘what are you waiting for? Eat up!’

The family cringe at her breakfast of choice, in shock and shaking their heads they slowly back away from the table.

(The mother portrayed as slightly insane highlights what a crazy dysfunctional idea it would be to have a world without bread.)
