A logo I did as part of a college project. The course hasn't given me much opportunity to refine my graphic design skills, but I jumped at the chance of being able to apply it to a project. This was for a brief on boundaries and barriers, and my focus for the brief was the vastly differing North and South Koreas. I thought it was interesting how a once united nation has been split into two sides that couldn't be any more seperate. The left side represents South Korea, a free and much lighter country. The right side represents North Korea, a much darker place (due to the lack of electricity save for a few key parts) being the reverse of the South. The letter A conveniently resembles a mountain, and I used it as a way to distance the two sides.

I was actually stuck for ideas for a piece to go with the brief, and this came about from me doodling the word 'Korea' in different ways. Will have to get photos of the sketches when I can up here.

The images above show the logo placed in Photoshop over a scan of a painting I did in class. I needed a good background for the logo, so I attempted to paint the map of the two countries with acrylic. South Korea is on the left, and North Korea is on the right. By the end of the painting session, the countries didn't look ENTIRELY accurate. But hey, with the type placed over it you get the idea of what the blue and red splodges are supposed to represent. I personally prefer the black and white version, as the North side's black mixing in with the red looks a little off. The logo was set to a Multiply layer in Photoshop, erasing the white and helping it fit onto the painting. These two images are the final piece for now, but I feel like I could do more with the logo.

The Koreas

A small college project for a brief about barriers and boundaries. I based my work on the differences between North and South Korea.
