People and Things

"People and Things"
Summae - MA Final Show at Leeds Metropolitan University

In this installation inanimate objects are being used in pursuance of constructing human personalities objectified by things. Personification of excessively consumed objects creates skewed reality in which non-humans gain increasing control over humans and the identity of an individual becomes hidden underneath sets of personified things that together create new character masks. The masks, taking possession of human-agents bearing them, dictate their will, whereupon the world becomes the theatrical stage on which an act is performed by things interacting with things, with humans serving as their mere vehicle.

A spectator becomes a transient participant of this unscripted act, performed by the characters formed from the installed, configured objects with which he can arbitrarily identify himself by an invocation; to undergo, in other words, a process of questioning his (own) identity, by proxy through poetic means. The impossible transaction is brought into play through a certain arrangement between spectator and spectacle, to the object, akin to theatrical and psychodramatic ‘catharsis’: the purification of, and liberation from, the power and over-proximity of Things.
