The Beauty of Hajj
Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, and one of the Five Pillars
of Islam. It is a blessed journey to the house of Allah, which was built by the
prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismael. By tradition the pilgrimage is
undertaken between the 7th and 12th days of the last month of the Islamic
year. Islam requires all Muslims who are physically and financially able to
make the hajj at least once in their lifetime.
We chose this subject because it represents our religion and it is part of our
identity. This work is communicating with the viewers in the series of the
same image addressed differently. Seeing the image of the people praying
around the Kaaba in synch with each other, made us owed to show the
essence of the beauty of Hajj through this work.
The beautiful rhythm presented in the image enforced by the circular motion
that is formed by people’s position while praying around the Kaaba in a
balanced and interesting way. This rhythm shows the harmony and unity in
this place. It is beyond than just capturing the kabba with people; instead it
carries a lot of rich meanings in this single movement.
The series consists of three prints of the same image; each illustrates a
different aspect of Hajj: 1) Origin: It the source of Islam and main place
where every Muslim on earth direct their prayers to this holly place. 2)
Unity: Muslims from all around the world are united to worship Allah and
ignoring their differences. 3) Harmony: people differ in many ways such as
language, culture, and race, however; they share the same religion and
gathered in this sacred place.
