Frank Reade: Adventures in the Age of Invention
Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett
Abrams, 2011
The inimitable duo of Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett — steampunk afficiandos and fantastic storytellers — have created a terrific, complex, involved, multilayered, action packed, adventure book, “Frank Reade: Adventures in the Age of Invention.”

Part history lesson, part dime-store novel, part adventure yarn, with hundreds of beautifully rendered illustrations, this book was perhaps the most complicated design project I’ve ever taken on. Of course the trick is not to make it look complicated, but intricate and inviting: fluid and naturally unfolding.

I worked closely with Paul and Anina, as well as fearless Abrams executive editor David Cashion to develop distinct but harmonious looks for the multitude of sections, sidebars, captions, notes and diagrams; doing full justice to the artwork without compromising the clarity.

The book will be released in February 2012. The following is a sneak peek of some favorite spreads.
