ABOUT THE PROJECT

The proposal seeks to address the issue of the lack of burial spaces in Singapore. The project aims to encourage sea burial as an alternative to columbariums and cemeteries, and in the process create a more meaningful journey for the bereaved in a crematorium rather than the most efficient, as seen in the ones in Singapore.

The intention is to identify the various phases of the emotional journey that the users of the crematorium undertake. The journey in it's simplified form can be understood as the different functions i.e. the service hall, viewing hall, and ash collection.

The design is based on the study that - When one is consumed with grief, the presence of something more powerful can be overwhelming than the presence of grief itself. In the the many case studies done on crematoriums, columbariums and cemetaries, it was observed that most of them were located in areas where the natural landscape was predominant, and the presence of nature was thereby highlighted.
