Granadillas (above) are like Christmas baubles and can fit in the palm of your hand. They are related to the passion fruit and contain clusters of seeds surrounded by juicy flesh. Delicious over ice cream! Here, I was fascinated by the old, dried flower still attached to the stem. So sculptural.
Pink Bananas really are pink! Some have mauve tones. They are slightly thicker and sweeter than the regular yellow variety.
Tree tomatoes appear like jewel-toned droplets that hang from their umbrella-shaped tree. Amazingly healthy and naturally sweet, they are delicious in breakfast juices (skin, seeds and all) or stewed. A natural cholesterol reducer.
Pomegranates seem planetary to my eye, complete with a singular volcano! It's the red tones that are so captivating when painting these orbs, each with its own personality. The skin is hard and waxy but inside is a constellation of red, flesh-wrapped seeds, best collected in a bowel, underwater as Martha Stewart advises.
These Red Pears are positioned as if in conversation. Their skins are slightly leathery and have slightly bronze hues. Very juicy, very tasty!
Star Fruit are both decorative and luminous. I love them in salads and as a compliment to a main course. Their architectural form creates endless possibilities for presentation and, they pack perfectly like a puzzle.
I'm told that Bobby Flay does a killer Tomatillo sauce... something to try! It's the 'lantern-jacket' that surrounds this fruit that is so curious... just like a cape. Such beautiful design!
