Realized as part of a JavaScript class, the primary goal of the project Rats of NYC lied in attaining the programming skills to realize web applications which utilize at least one external API. I browsed all kinds of data until I found a database of rat sightings in New York City at the NYC Open Data website. Each dataset comes with dates and coordinates, so it was possible to visualize each rat sighting on a map using the Google Maps API. Since New York City suffers a rat infestation, this project could not just be informative but also helpful for local authorities through making it mobile compatible and by extending it with a “spot”-function.
