Background and overview of area of study :

The World Bank Organization describes poverty in this way: “Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to study. Poverty is not holding a job, is concern for the future, living one day at a time.

Over the past ten years, Singapore has registered robust economic growth and consistently placed amongst the states with the highest GDP per capital around the world. Over the same period, inequality has grown precipitously. Singapore does not have an official poverty line. Withal, the living conditions and incomes of the poor amongst the Singapore resident population, while not reaching the leave of destitution experienced in growing states, nonetheless suggest that Singapore needs to reassess the path in which poverty is poverty is acknowledged, defined and addressed.

Jalan Kukoh, A housing district nested in the heart of the retail and entertainment hub in Singapore, and is one of the two slums in the country. 70% of the residents there are previous and/or present drug offenders. Most of the aged there are deserted by their children, and are paid $170 a month together with 3 meals provided a daytime, to survive through their remaining years. Other than the stingy amount of money paid by the government, charity organisation will pass out free groceries every two weeks to further alleviate the load of these residents. On that point are also kids who are left at home to fend for themselves after school as their parents are out reaching a living to survive the fast-paced life in Singapore. Referable to the deficiency of oversight of their parent, many of the youngsters have gone down into bad influences, having them to lost interest in their fields at a very youthful age. Although, residents in Jalan Kukoh do not receive a glamorous background, they constitute the heartland of this estate; and their notorious stories can bring balers to many residents staying within the same area. This is a neighbourhood with a deep story and stories behind it. However, despite the constant fears and worries that the residents have, it is still a place where some of them call home

In order to addressed the issues of poverty in Jalan Kukoh, a new change is required. It needs new narratives, and  people will take heed to them when they themselves are admitted in the stories. Today, storytelling is wildly popular. It’s regarded as the key to succeeding in business, social change, and drumming up funding for advocacy and efforts. We need new narratives that connect with peoples’ deepest motivations and encourage more radical action. Stories engage people at every stage, not only in their heads, but in their emotions, values and imaginations, which are the drivers of real change. Thus if i am require to bring about awareness to the society, I must learn to tell, and listen to a novel set of narratives about the world I desire to make.
Design Statement :

My project is a subject area of creating new stories about poverty in Jalan Kukoh, and to bring about a alteration in attitude of Singaporean towards poverty
Objective or purpose of the project :

In light of the growing concerns about increasing inequality and the existence, extent and nature of poverty in Singapore, it is time for Singaporean to take action in driving a societal change, by interpreting the values of fellow Singaporean living in poverty. I know that most Singaporeans are not mindful of the scale and the depth of poverty in Singapore. The procedure of engaging Singaporean will generate greater public awareness for efforts to address the needs of the poverty in Jalan Kukoh.
