Sea Monsters
A McWane Science Center exhibit featuring specimens from Alabama's Cretaceous Sea
This exhibit area features a large number of specimens which are described in on-demand videos and with labels and backlit graphics. I worked with fellow graphic designer Robb Letts to create a coordinated look for the graphics that reminds the visitor of the sea from which these specimens came.
Many of the graphics in Sea Monsters are laid out with the same undulating flow as the case forms and reflect the ever-changing underwater light patterns of the lighting effects.
I gave the Sea Monsters title sign a flowing form to integrate with the other flowing elements in the exhibit area. Its letters have been sandblasted to reflect the color-changing LED's which flow from blue to green and back again in waves.
The screens are acrylic with a special projection film carefully applied so that the graphics and video can be projected from behind the cases. The name of the major species in each video is sandblasted into the acrylic above the screen.
Backlit graphicsare included in the push button panels where visitors can select the different video information they desire.
Not every specimen featured video content, so I designed signage to mimic the form of the screens with a background that blends into the wall to play upon the lighting effect.
