relations, ships & wrecks: maps of time and sex

relations, ships & wrecks:
a series of maps exploring time and sex

this project sleeps quietly at:
rswblog.tumblr.com
i made maps that show a person's entire sexual history from the beginning to current day of his or her life. each map represents a single individual, and is based on a list made by its owner.

the maps explore the idea of a surface area, instead of a timeline in more complicated data sets and visualizations. this solution references the idea of rings in a tree trunk, and allows the viewer to sort the data in different ways. (for example, examining the month of june through the years, considering an entire season, comparing one age to another or even comparing one season to another.

relations, ships & wrecks was a two-semester project for my bachelor of fine arts degree. it was finished in may '09 after the long-repeated panic of impending failure.

the map key
     - smushed up a whole lot to cater to the size of this layout
      - shown above the key is an illustration showing how multiple partners at one time were handled

color brightness and saturation are used to "measure" the sexual and emotional interaction of each experience. this helps give weight and meaning to the maps, as well as encouraging narrative.
thanks for this fantastic photo, chris!
