Leviathan is an album by Annot Rhül. Being described as “melodic, floating space progressive rock with a lot of synthesizers” and “creative, solid and adventurous”, it takes you from space, into the deep sea, to Antarctica, and back again.
The illustrations are selected scenery and imagery from the narrative parts of the album. Designing with digital, CD, vinyl gatefold and posters in mind meant working at very high resolutions and making key illustrations semi modular, allowing parts to slide to fit the different formats.
The front and the mountains went through a lot of sketching. I tried to avoid the look of snakes or punctured tubes for the tentacles. And I wanted quite stylized water, without falling into the Hokusai cliche.
The scope and duration of the process made this a style defining piece of work for me. I emerged with improved skills, techniques and workflow.
I also play drums on this, and have contributed on some of the arrangements .
