Customized Art Toys

Toy Design
Custom one-of-a-kind Kidrobot mecha munny based on my “MACHINE TYPE AW177-STEALTH EDITION” design.  The white design is available as a t-shirt from Outsmart Originals, while the black design is exclusive to me.

This custom comes with 8 LED lights that can be programmed to flash, flicker, stay steady, etc.  The lights are placed in the top of the head, 2 in each eye, one in the chest and 2 in the booster rockets on the back.  You can flip up the backpack to get to the lighting terminal easily.
A commission piece for a client who requested a remix of my old "Koi" Mad*L that was given away in a collaboration with SpankyStokes.com back in 2009.  The client requested a koi similar to the old one but done a bit differently and with the word "Iris" in kanji characters in the back.

The piece was varnished with a gloss coat that gave it a very clear shine, especially with the transparent blue body (the pictures do not show the shine too well).

Much appreciation goes out to the client! Thank you for your support and it's people like you that make me continue to do what I do!
Artist Matt Anderson's custom sculpted and cast artist series Night Terror Owl Dunnys . I thought the figure and design was unique and real cool, so volunteered to custom one along with a 3"x3" artist card. Matt's going to open them up for individual sales at NYCC and then online after.

Open boxed, $100 each at NYCC, booth #3121; afterwards, to inquire a piece, drop him a line at anderson.artdesign@yahoo.com.
AW177 Circuit Death Custom 3" Dunny

A cyborg circuitry warrior, based off my "Circuit Death" logo.

This was a commission from a collector of custom 3" Chuckboy dunnys and I am happy to be a part of his collection.

"Blossoming Koi"

A custom DIY Zukie for the Zukie vs. the World custom group show at the Toy Tokyo Underground Gallery from July 27-29, 2012.

Zukies are a blank vinyl figure and they're "Mysterious characters that do not talk; they have thought bubbles and facial expressions. Zukies are about color." Zukies also "intend to generate emotions through their visual thoughts."

I wanted to convey my "visual thoughts" by painting a colorful Koi jumping out of the water, surrounded by cherry blossoms. Kois represent perseverance in the face of adversity and blossoms represent living life to the fullest. I hope my Zukie will generate this emotion in everyone.

If you get a chance to go to the show, check out my figure. Opening reception will be held on July 27th, 6pm - 10pm at Toy Tokyo Underground Gallery.
"Eyes of the Dragon" Mystery Machine

The theme of the show was either candy or something British; I decided to focus on doing something totally different than my usual work. I wanted to create a piece that not only would allow people to view it but also had them play with it. After much deliberation and trial-and-errors, I decided to concentrate on making a real working gumball/mystery machine. This was created using a 10" Mad*L and incorporating parts from a gumball machine into it.

At the show, the idea would be to put a quarter into the slot, turn the wheel and catch the gumball that comes out. I placed 2 marbles (the "eyes of the dragon") inside with the gumballs and if you were lucky to grab one of the marbles, you would win a prize (one of my "Circuit Death" t-shirts).

The piece will be up for sale here: http://www.tenacioustoys.com/The_Candy_Coated_Custom_Show_s/176.htm

Bitsumo is a hand casted 4.5" tall resin collector toy. He has 7 points of articulation and a hand-tied mawashi. Metallic gold dragon painted on the back and completed with a slight gloss finish.

AW177 x SoSo Happy x Toy2R Custom MonQ Mar10

I was one of the lucky artists invited to customize an 8" DIY Toy2R Qee in the fashion of the SoSo Happy (http://) theme using my style/look.

The SoSo Happy folks will take the customized Qees on tour to different locations/conventions for display. There is also the potential opportunity to have some of these Qees made into production. I chose the character Mar10 from the Kiibots line. I added a few of my signature Chinese motifs, including the double happiness character in the back. Circuitry lines for the arms and legs and larger animated eyes. Gloss coat as a finish since this is a robot!

I would love to have this become a production toy, so if you like it, please let Toy2R/SoSo Happy know!
AW177 "Dragon Ninja" Custom Play Imaginative/Disney Mickey Mouse

I was asked by Play Imaginative to custom one of their 6.5" Mickey Mouse vinyl art figures. This piece will be displayed at shows by Disney/Play Imaginative and will be up on their website (http://www.playimaginative.com/disney_custom.html#page=page-1).

To celebrate the year of the dragon 2012, I made Mickey into a "Dragon Ninja", complete with equipment belt, shurikens, pouches for gear, striking/climbing knives, dragon claws on feet and hands, and nunchucks! You can place the nunchucks into the back for storage. Dragon symbol on the upper ear, black outlines to give it a more animated/cartoon feel.

This custom is based on one of the designs I submitted to Play Imaginative/Disney for possible production, so if you like to see it made, please let them know!

"Year of the Dragon 2012" Custom 8" Kidrobot Dunny

I created a custom 8" Kidrobot dunny, "Year of the Dragon 2012", which celebrates Chinese New Year (January 23, 2012).

This custom dunny represents the dragon, the mightiest of all the Chinese zodiac signs, the supreme spiritual power, the most ancient mythological emblem of dominance and ambition.

This will be on sale/display at the Kidrobot NY store, located at 118 Prince Street
New York, NY 10012. If you happen to visit the store, I'd love to see some pictures of the display. Please send them to me if you can, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!
AW177 "Dragon vs Tiger" Custom 16" Toy2R Qee for NYCC 2011

Benny of Tenacious Toys (www.tenacioustoys.com) was kind enough to give me a 16" Toy2R Bear Qee to customize. This is my first time working on any platform larger than 8", so this took a very long time and many many hours were put into it.

I wanted to combine into one toy the dragon vs. tiger theme, so I created the elements in radiant gold outlines and tried to keep it very simple. The Chinese characters say dragon vs. tiger and the ones by the leg says good luck. Also dragon vs. tiger can be represented by the yin and yang.

This was on display/sale at New York Comic Con at the Toy2R/Tenacious Toys booth #876; it is now SOLD!

AW177 "Dragon vs. Tiger" Custom 5" Toy2R Mini Qees

Custom Toy2R mini Qees "Dragon vs. Tiger" when you combine the "Rise of the Dragon" and "Power of the Tiger" mini Qees.

Both will be on display/sale at New York Comic Con at the Toy2R/Tenacious Toys booth #876!
AW177 "Power of the Tiger" Custom 5" Toy2R Mini Qee

Benny of Tenacious Toys (http://www.tenacioustoys.com) was kind enough to give me 3 Toy2R mini Qees to customize. Taking the Toy2R Monkey Qee to work on, I created a new Chinese tiger on the front and the words Power/Strength on the back.  It has a monotone paint scheme of black, white and grey, but with a touch of bright red in it. I also coated it in a matte varnish, when I usually do all my custom toys in a gloss varnish.

This will be on display/sale at New York Comic Con at the Toy2R/Tenacious Toys booth #876!

A commission from an awesome friend who wanted  a rice bowl custom on a mini munny.  The hardest part was trying to get the head as smooth as possible, it took a ton of time to sculpt and sand, but I think this came out beautifully.  I also gave it a glaze to give it a more porcelain look and added small details via decals.

Accessories: it comes with a chopsticks and a holder that fits into the left hand of the dunny and the chopsticks stick to it via velcro.

AW177 "Rise ofthe Dragon" Custom 5" Toy2R Mini Qee

Benny of Tenacious Toys (http://www.tenacioustoys.com) was kind enough to give me 3 Toy2R mini Qees to customize. Taking the iconic Toy2R Bear Qee to work on first, I created a new Chinese dragon on the front and the words Good Luck on the back.  It has a monotone paint scheme of black, white and grey, but with a touch of bright red in it. I also coated it in a matte varnish, when I usually do all my custom toys in a gloss varnish.

I wanted to step away from my usual style of brightly colored, 'all over' complex designs and just step back and do something a bit simpler.

This will be sold on the Tenacious Toys website; more details to come!
Custom 3" Chinese "Rice Bowl" dunny, based on the design of a traditional Chinese rice bowl.

Accessories: comes with a small bag of rice, 2 types of chopsticks (1 traditional brown, 1 fancy matching colors), and a holder that fits into the left hand of the dunny and the chopsticks stick to it via velcro.

Custom "Lucky" Miao & Mousubi DIY vinyl figure.
Elite Division Warrior "Dragon Power" - custom 5" Mad*L collaboration with Kevin Gosselin.
Elite Division Warrior "Tiger Fury" - custom 5" Mad*L collaboration with Kevin Gosselin.
Elite Division Warrior "Phoenix Rising" - custom 5" Mad*L collaboration with Kevin Gosselin.
Custom "Koi Blossom" Jouwe vinyl figure created for the Jouwe group custom show at Toy Art Gallery (TAG) located at 737 Seward St. #1, Los Angeles, CA 90038 (www.toyartgallery.com).

Opening reception: October 1, 7-10pm, runs from October 1 - 29, 2010.

The Jouwe figure is great and I didn't want to modify the form of it; I wanted to enhance it and give it a more traditional Asian pattern. The Jouwe form looks like a tough yet cute little rhino guy, so wanted to give it a more 'love' feel to it - hence why I chose the Koi.
"Dragon vs. Phoenix" Custom Artoyz Element Earth Commission for a very patient client who wanted a dragon vs. phoenix design on an Artoyz Elements Earth figure. Dragon is on the front, Phoenix is on the back. Kanji symbol for "love" is on the front.

Elements are a fusion of Chinese and Japanese styles to create a unique piece of art.  Custom comes with a signed 5"x7" framed picture of "Dragon vs. Phoenix".

"Circuitz" is the name of my entry for the Power Arts for Power Up - Mr. Power Custom Show, May 21 to June 1, 2010 from 6-9pm at ToyQube.

I'm attempting something different w/ this custom than my past ones - trying to move into a different approach/direction!

Year of the Tiger" Custom Chinese New Year 2010 Mad*L

Chinese New Year 2010 has significance for me since I was born in the year of the tiger! "Year of the Tiger" custom Mad*L was created to celebrate Chinese New Year 2010!

"Year of the Tiger" represents determination, aggressiveness, drive and craving for success!

Gung Hei Fat Choy!
Kidrobot Forums Messageboard Artist Series 1 - AW177 "Year of the Dragon"

Custom 3" golden dragon dunny with pearl created for the Kidrobot Forums Messageboard Artist Series 1. There are 10 pieces to this set.

The Kidrobot forums always spoke about doing a series of dunnys based on the art of forum members, but Kidrobot never took the initiative to do so. A few members of the boards took it upon themselves to start one up and I was chosen to be a part of it.
Koi Dragon" Custom 5" Labbit

The Meaning of the Koi Dragon Labbit
In Japanese folklore, the koi fish represents courage, strength of will or persistence in the face of difficulty. Legend has it that the koi fish travels up the Yellow River to the Dragon Gate, transforming into a dragon which represents power and ferocity. The koi dragon is the phase where the koi leaps from the river through the gate, overcoming all obstacles and the adversity of the strong river to fulfill its destiny into a full dragon.
The 'jade' pendant is the kanji symbol for courage - it's a reminder to always have courage when faced with hardship and persevere to the end. Jade has many meanings in Chinese culture, meaning to draw in spirituality, longevity, luck, confidence, love and protection.

The Chinese red envelope in the mouth is a 'hong pao' with the kanji symbol for double happiness. In the tradition of the Chinese lion dance, 'hong paos' with money are handed to the lions through the mouth to bring good luck, happiness and fortune.

The lotus blossoms are flowers that start off small at the bottom of a pond, in the mud and muck and slowly grows up towards the water surface. They continue moving towards the light and once it reaches the surface, the lotus will blossom into a beautiful flower - overcoming the dark to reach the light.
This Koi Dragon labbit is a representation of all these ideals, to always have courage to overcome all hardships and wishing you all the best in life!

Notes: This was my first time in using Sculpey for the 'jade' pendant, so hope it looks ok! This was a custom commission by my good bud Linh Pham.
