Dérive Illustration Project

I produced this work during a three-week-long project for a digital illustration class at Sacramento City College.

Part I: The Dérive
We were instructed to go on a "dérive" or unplanned journey through an unfamiliar city. The professor encouraged us to get completely lost in this new place and then document the experience with photos. I decided that Sacramento would be the location of my dérive since I was relatively unfamiliar with the city at the time. I biked 17 miles from my apartment in Davis to downtown Sacramento, and walked around the capitol, taking photos along the way.

I tried to capture unusual form, framing, and perspective in my photos, an attempt to examine the city from unlikely points of view.

Part II: Psychogeography Study
I used Photoshop to composite my dérive photos, rotating, rescaling, and aligning the images to create interesting formal juxtapositions.
Dérive photo composite
I traced the composite in Illustrator, creating a psychogeographic illustration of my dérive experience.

Part III: Cityscape Illustration
I drew inspiration from the forms and perspectives in my dérive photos to illustrate an imaginary cityscape. For this part of the project we were limited to using triangles, quadrilaterals, and elipses to build the illustration.
