Table project for Sophomore Studios, Fall 2014
18" x 30" x 14.5"
white oak (outer structure is fumed with ammonia), birch ply (camshaft), canvas (slat joints), polypropylene (internal disk bearings for the shaft)
I saw the table as a quiet surface waiting to be disturbed. Rather than a functional object, I wanted to build a site for an event - a form which rises from below and then submerges back again. To do this, I worked with a cam mechanism to give myself a high degree of control over the range of movements - speed, height, duration - at any given point in the cycle while gaining valuable experience about the compatibilities and incompatibilities of woodworking by hand and moving parts.
(Sketching 12 frames of movement and plotting 12 cam shapes accordingly on AutoCAD)
