FOR THE MOSCOW SUBWAY

The purpose of my thesis was to design a railway machine for the Moscow subway in cooperation with AURORA engineering company. Final design fulfills the ergonomic criteria, the optimal view from the driver's cab, technical standards and low volume production requirements.

THE ISSUE
Subway train power supply is provided by a conductor rail, also called 3rd rail. The conductive function of the rail is ensured by material characteristics of the steel, which is dense with a carbon. Trains use for the power supply connectors shaped as a brush. It helps to keep the contact between train and the rail, but also abraded the high-conductive carbon dust from the rail surface. This carbon dust accumulates usually on the rail bracket and often causes a short circuit on the railway, which is necessary to eliminate for save public transport. My project offers design of the machine, that resolves the issue.

WASHING MECHANISM
Cleaning mechanism works in 2 steps. At first, the high pressured water is sprayed by jets
on the rail bracket to wash down carbon dust. Than, the rail and the bracket are dried
by hot air fan. The Fans are installed on the each side twice, on the front and on the back
to ensure cleaning of the brackets on both sides in every direction.
