This project was assigned to me by the University of the Aegean. The title of the project was: "Invisible Islands". What I tried to focus on in order to make this project was the meaning of the word invisible. Anything that is visible can become ivisible. Anyone can even be staring at something but his imagination can make him travel in other places.
I chose to take pictures of everyday life in the Island of Syros Greece. An island can seem like a mass of rock floating on the infinite sea. But if we get closer, if we step on the island and see the people, smell the foods that are being cooked but even the smell of a car exhaust, the island doesn't seem like a distant mass anymore.
I made a collage with pictures cut into triangles so that altogether they look like an island. If someone is close to the collage, they can view the pictures from everyday moments and sights of the island. So at that moment the island is invisible. If on the other hand you step away from the picture, you can only see a big floating piece of rock, so the actual island with all the beauty of everyday life is invisible.
