Springburn Winter Gardens, Glasgow

The Springburn park asks the Visitor to linger on the threshold between Industry and Nature. Numerous references to the once prosperous steam locomotive industry embroider the sceneries of the park hinting at a past of operosity, and technological advancement.

This proposal interprets and gives prominence to this theme to introduce the visitors to the Winter Gardens.
In this way, the principal formal solution proposed for the site layout is a frequent natural subdivision diagram, the Voronoi decomposition - metaphor here for the technological recreation of Nature. The topography of the intervention site has been tessellated following a recursive subdivision process, denser in the areas between the demolished Winter Garden's wings and the area in correspondence with the proposed built intervention. The same subdivision principle is then applied on the garden furniture, the pavilion and the shelters.

Within the perimeter of the demolished Winter Garden's wings, the cells are filled with fallow green and aromatic plants to hint to both their future reconstruction and the previous abandon of the site. The sitting areas are furnished with benches and arranged to favour different observations points to the Winter Garden. Two paths connect the garden with the asphalted road of the park inviting to slow down the pace on their gravel covering. New birch trees are planted in areas covered with bak mulch to stabilise the soil moisture.

The proposed pavilion and shelters offer an adaptable solution to host a variety of activities to involve the local community with the initiatives of the Trust. In its contracted form, the two shelters lay above the pavilion as a layered roof structure. When needed, the shelters can extend offering a thirty-two squared meters covered space and the doors of the pavilion can be adjusted to leave one side of the pavilion completely open.
