UV2 / portable water depurator
My project aims to transfer a recent technology such as UV-led from Western countries’ uses to developing countries population. My project started in Semptember 2008 during a workshop in San Marino (RSM) with Alberto Meda; the seminars concerned water pumping, transport and treatmant. This very first concept was fundamental for the actual development. Before designing it, detailed info on examplar countries (e.g. Rwanda) and the main limits in these areas were given. The direct experience of many of the tutors in the workshop helped me in focusing on a different reality and it gave me solid basis on the subject.
Experimenting with new technologies for water depuration drove me into UV leds. Knowing of and later testing such a new technology helped me creating a portable and auto power supplied water depurator. My work aims to make water drinkable in those countries where it is necessary to supply water in presence of infrastructural limits. In these areas, usually rural ones, the only alternative is water from wells or rivers containing bacteria and viruses. These areas also have electricity shortage or absence: water and light thus are the keywords for the UV2 project. Countries lacking these resources though have a high non drinkable water availability. After taking into consideration common features in these countries I fixed some guidelines for the design. UV2 brief concerned mainly ease of use and functionality. I avoided any deep aesthetical studies that seemed unappropriate for the context and the volunty of satisfing a common desire.
