Urban Equinox | Light Pop-Up Architecture Charette
The Urban Equinox project was a week long charette. With the assistance of two Finnish lighting experts, Hannu Tikka and Julle Oksanen, the class was challenged to create a pop-up flash mob space on the aforementioned transect that used both natural and artificial light. I chose to have my design use large planar surfaces with sharp angles that could both let light in while still shading some of the harshest light out. During the night when artificial light would need to be used, the surfaces could be dramatically up-lighted from the bottom highlighting the very sculptural aspects of the structure.
This structure was designed to grab the attention of the pedestrians moving on the street above and draw them to the performance space below. This is done by making it "grab" the bridge with structural members interupting the bridge wall and coming down and into the sidewalk itself.
