WOMEN IN RED (ISTD 2010)

Women in red
Women in the Arab world, as in other areas of the world, have throughout history experienced discrimination and have been subject to restrictions of their freedoms and rights. Some of these practices are based on religious beliefs, but many of the limitations are cultural and emanate from tradition rather than religion and law.

Women in the arab world are accorded a role inferior to that of men, they have less personal rights and freedom and therefore there is an imbalance between women and men.

This booklet shows this loss of balance and interpret it in a manner that not only expresses but informs us of the imbalance. It suggests that an imbalanced situation deserves attention using numbers, facts, colors and icons.

Women are not allowed to vote in Saudi Arabia, there are no women in the Omani and Qatari parliament, 55% of arab women are illiterate, 95% of Egyptian women have undergone female genital mutilation… Many choking facts about arab women must be told, their voices must be heard.
