There are fewer natural forms that I find more magical than the “bait ball.” There are also fewer forms that I find more cruel. In the open ocean, bait fish are often corralled by predators into tight schools. Shoulder to shoulder, swimming in slow circles, unable to see beyond the seventeen fish immediatley around you. Inside the school, there is a sense of safety born of uniform motion and desire. It is impossible to see what is happening on the edges, until the moment there are only sixteen fish around you. In this new moment, you can only accept what has happened and the inevitable to come.
