The idea behind the Prohibition Collection was simple. Vintage alcohol themed decks from the 1920's era. Each deck represents a different alcohol for a truly immersed experience. I created a prototype wooden box that the decks would be stored in, I actually used a fence board from the backyard, Wife wasn't impressed ;)
The collection has 6 decks, missing from the image below is Disparos Tequila. Oban Jones was responsible for the design of that one.
This was the initial prototype for the box. It was slightly refined before production.
The idea behind this was to create a flowing dream that took you to another world. Absinthe is known for it's psychedelic trip and green fairies so that's something I wanted to incorporate. I'd love to know if the green fairies are real. I wanted the court cards to express that psychedelic feeling to go along with the box, I had Oban create some of the most beautiful courts I've ever seen.
Vintage and tropical is the feeling behind this deck. It took quite a few mocks before I found the correct colour scheme that possessed that tropical feeling. The beautiful back design and ace are by Valentina Badeanu.
White Wolf Vodka
White Wolf was the underdog in the set. It was the last one I created and had a totally different style than the rest. Most vodka packaging is very minimalistic, so I wanted to keep with that theme. The courts are by Oban and ace by Valentina.
Distilled in car radiators by hillbillies in the back woods, that's what most people think of when they hear MoonShine. I wanted the box to look rough and used as if it were found 80 years later. Printed on what looks like kraft paper, the MoonShine deck can take you back to the rumrunning days. Logo by Steve Wolf.
52 Proof Whiskey
First off, the name is a play on words for 52 cards in a deck. 52 Proof whiskey isn't very strong ;)
This was the deck that started it all. Before the conception of a Prohibition Collection, this deck was designed to reflect a whiskey label. Whiskey labels draw me in with this great feeling of warmth to them. After I finished this deck it sparked the idea to create more in this same style.
