Winter Mini Project (2014) - Intro Animation

PERSONAL MINI PROJECT
*This intro is not my design. I simply tried my best at reverse engineering how the show made their intro.*

As winter break was in full spring I decided I needed to keep myself busy. Something that I always liked to do is figure out how things work. I watched the Conan show a few times at night and realized that his show intro would be a good start.

So the next day I sat down at my computer and started to work. I carefully watched the intro multiple times and dissected it and made notes of key points in the animation. I realized a majority of the animation was just one animated luma matte that was copied multiple times. So I made one pre comp that was the base for the luma matte. I then made a few more pre comps of that pre comp for some of the other animations. I then made an avocado flat bread (for lunch). I organized the animation into 8 different scenes to make it easier for me to work and also easier to animation the transitions by just wiping the pre comped scenes left and right.

The hardest part of making this animation was trying to figure out how to make the orange wipe for Conan's name and the blue wipe for Andy's at the end. It turned out luma mattes can be very picky with what order they are in. But after spending eight hours working on the entire animation, (with some lunch and hot chocolate breaks thrown in), in one day I was able to recreate the Conan intro to the best of my ability.
I do not own any of the music, sounds, or logo for the Conan show. I used these elements to help me get a better understanding of After Effects and further my studies in my Motion Media education.
