Finale Collection Showcased at UNBOUND2011
In the 6th and final semester of Fanshawe College's three year Fashion Design program, students like myself were tasked with independently creating our own finale collection of five keys looks to be presented at the annual UNBOUND fashion show. This process required trend, market (target customer) and silhouette  research that would form the basis for creatively conceptualizing the collection. Once a series of ten complete looks were compiled, we ventured to Toronto to consult with numerous experts in our Industry for feedback and critiques, which included: Leesa Butler, Gail McGinnes, Erin O'Brien and Brandon R. Dwyer. Afterwards we were left to use those critiques to improve and modify our collections, or in some cases start completely from scratch, for final evaluations before leaving for New York for the fabric shopping trip. Once we returned to London, work began as we started pattern-making and/or draping our designs to be cut and sewn to designer level craftsmanship.
Meanwhile, through all the malnourishment and sleep deprivation, we worked as a collective group to also conceptualize the theme for the fashion show hand-in-hand with some of the trends we were using for our collections. Sponsors were signed on for funds going towards our budget or donation/lending of products for decor or service. Family and friends were asked to help by purchasing tickets and/or help pitch in for our mandatory deposit for the bundling with Flare in September, 2011 in major cities across Canada. Forms were filled and passed along to superiors and volunteers were trained weeks before and organized the day before for the dress rehearsal and the day of the afternoon and evening shows. To clarify, only those who were qualified by the buying team at Saffron Road, London were allowed to showcase their collections in the evening shows.
Herein below is the hard work and dedication of a young aspiring artist who joined the graduating class in the UNBOUND 2011 fashion show held at Museum London.
My target customer is a very artistic and sophisticated woman in a creative field such, as 3-D animation, graphic or fashion design. She is a Canadian woman who is connected to nature and her natural Canadian roots. She is inspired by a vision of the future as it is unfolding around us through technological breakthroughs and the understanding of human nature, both elements of which are embodied in this collection.
My thesis is an alternate Universe where spirituality and science merge; technology, science and other wonderous knowledge is revealed through spiritual texts, such as the Bible. The fabric reflecting the earliest time periods will influence the look through brushed suede, aged linens, hand-woven-like cottons, and yarn-dyed knits.
The advancement in knowledge is depicted through the general evolution of technology and language which is futuristic in a primitive and somewhat raw translation. Silhouettes will be futuristic in design with reference to ancient origins, accented by futuristic stylelines and construction details that combine both soft, flowy and structured fabrications.
