responsive site concept
Shortly before the college started its web redesign process, our Web Editor created a responsive site for a new campus initiative using a template. This was a new concept for our team and the approach of responsive design, where content is king, was a bit jarring.
Unhappy with how some of the elements were moving between screen sizes, I was asked to reimagine the site while maintaining the minimalism of the text area. Having never designed a responsive site, I started with research. I read articles, looked at other institutions with responsive sites and watched how their content moved between devices. Where did various elements go? How did menus adjust? Links? Graphics? Then I sat down to explore what that might look like on this site.
I created this concept first but there was a shocking lack of tartan.
So a tartan bar was added to the top portion of the page next to the image carousel. A dropdown menu absorbs the many links to the left on the previous site, leaving the majority of the page open so that text elements may move freely.
The video centers itself with the rest of the text as the veiwing device is changed to a tablet.
Editing the design to fit smaller handheld devices proved more challenging and I'm unsure if my solution would even be possible if made into a fully functioning site, but it helped to raise many questions about the effectiveness of our current site and the possibilities for the redesign ahead.
