Movember 2014 Sketchbook Project

Movember 2014 Sketchbook Project

This year we decided to do the Movember challenge at my day job Márla Communications. The design team grew ridiculous moustaches all for a good cause. Alongside this I decided to do a Movember inspired sketch for each day of the month. This was a great experience as it not only kept me sketching daily, but it also filled in for the fact I totally forgot to do Inktober!

The shots below are from each of the spreads in the 30 days (decorated with the tools used), plus some close up details of each.

I hope you enjoy

"The Explorer"

General Sherman ordered the resumption of the Union advance into Georgia. He ordered General Thomas to defeat the army of Hood while he planned to advance north to assist Grant in his defeat of Lee. Grant was fighting 1,000 miles away so Sherman marched his men to Savannah to allow for a march up the eastern coastline. Bolstered with plenty of supplies acquired from Atlanta, Sherman was confident of success. He also knew that the land his men were marching through was rich in supplies.

"Confused Hipster" *
11th of Movember

"War is hell"
12th of Movember

* Fun fact: My 2 and a half year old son managed to get his hands on my sketchbook and pens on the evening of the 11th and got to work! You can see the beginnings of his scrawls above. Luckily I managed to get them off him before more damage was done. Lesson learned!

"WW1 German Commander"
13th of Movember

"Einstein plays chess"
14th of Movember

"It died in Okinawa"
15th of Movember

"El Diablo"
16th of Movember

"It's Russian"
17th of Movember

"Civil War"
18th of Movember

Double scene showing a "what if" scenario hyperbole of Russia "attacking" the states. A strange time indeed.

19th and 20th of Movember 1956

"I love kittens"
21st of Movember

"Outerstellar"
22nd of Movember

"Undiciplined Lady boy"
23rd of Movember

"Not impressed"
24th of Movember

"Auditions"
25th of Movember

"William Thomas Turner"
26th of Movember

Commander William Thomas Turner, OBE, RNR was the Captain of the RMS Lusitania when it was sunk by a German torpedo in May 1915. A son, Merchant Navy Able Seaman Percy Wilfred Turner, age 55. From an old grainy photo it looked like he had a moustache, but most show him without one... so here he has one!

"Gustav Schröder"
27th of Movember

Gustav Schröder was a sea captain, who is best known for attempting to save 937 German Jews, who were passengers on his ship, the MS St. Louis, from the Nazis in 1939.

"NRA4EVA"
28th of Movember

"Over the top"
29th and 30th of Movember

I was always facinated by world war one and two. What fascinated me even more was the way troops would go over the top and get cut down. Such bravery met with brutality.
