Background of The Research
: Among various cultures that I’ve come across in my everyday life, I’ve had an interest in the culture of goblin. Since most of the contents on monster culture were either Japanese or Chinese, I was curious about the monster culture of Korea. However, I couldn’t easily find organized information on it since the story ‘unmarried woman ghost’ is only known for Korean monster. I conducted in-depth research by selecting Korean monster as my senior project to find that although there are many materials on monster based on old books, only a part of them was being introduced online or in booklets that introduce Oriental monster along with Chinese and Japanese monsters. Considering this an unfortunate situation, I began my study of Korean traditional monster.
: 평소 요괴에 대한 문화가 흥미롭다고 여겨 관심을 가져왔었는데, 요괴 문화에 관련된 콘텐츠들은 대부분 일본이나 중국이었기에 자연스럽게 한국의 요괴 문화에 대해서 궁금해하게 되었다. 하지만 한국 요괴는 대부분 처녀 귀신 이야기만 알려졌었고, 정돈된 정보도 쉽게 찾을 수 없었기에 아쉽게 생각하고 있었다. 그러던 중 2013년 졸업 프로젝트로 한국요괴도감을 선택하여 본격적인 리서치를 시작하고 나자, 300가지가 넘는 요괴들이 존재하고 있다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 옛 서적들의 역사적인 기록 속에 존재하는 요괴들이 많음에도 불구하고, 그 중 일부만이 인터넷에서 떠돌고 있거나 동방요괴를 소개하는 책자에서 중국, 일본 요괴와 함께 넌시시 소개되고 있을 뿐이었다. 이러한점을 안타깝게 생각하여 잃어버린 한국 요괴의 얼굴을 찾아주는 프로젝트를 시작하게 되었다.
Meaning of Study & Research Value
: Monster is a valuable culture that has been passed down in the lives of ordinary people, and it is an important material that contains the lives and joys & sorrows of my people. In this era where history and tradition are being emphasized in various areas such as typeface, architecture, sculpture and painting, there is a need for monster culture to follow such trend. In addition, Japan and China are developing various new areas such as movies, moving images, tourism and products based on their well developed monster culture. Based on my summary of Korean monster, I think there is a possible for it to advance into a richer culture by creating new contents by others.
: 요괴는 민중의 삶 속에서 전해져 내려온 가치 있는 문화로, 우리 민족의 삶과 애환이 묻어나 있는 중요한 자료이다. 서체, 건축, 조각, 회화 등 다양한 분야에서 역사와 전통이 부각되고 있는 시기에 맞추어 요괴 문화도 이러한 흐름에 맞추어 따라가려는 노력이 필요하다고 생각된다. 그리고 일본이나 중국은 이미 잘 발달한 요괴 문화를 바탕으로 영화, 영상, 관광, 제품 등 다양한 분야를 새롭게 개발하고 있다. 이 프로젝트를 기반으로 제 삼자가 새로운 콘텐츠를 창작하게 된다면 더욱 풍요로운 컨텐츠 문화 생산과 발전에 도움이 될 수 있을거라고 기대한다.
