Aerospace Photography

Just finished  industrial photography assignment for Composite Horizons, Ind. , who makes ceramic and composite parts for the aerospace industry. It was an extremely challenging assignment because their design firm showed me an ad for GE as a comp and then said it did not have to look exactly like the ad for which they took a whole day to shoot and brought in15 people to produce. Sigh.........Further more they wanted a lot of work in a short period of time.

The first challenge was to photograph a pair of Autoclaves (GE adv), large ovens used to bake composite materials (900 degrees )under extreme pressure or a vacuum . They were about 17 ft tall and perhaps 25 feet long. We were able to achieve the shot in about three hours with three assistants and with 9 strobes and a fair amount of post production.

We literally had to invent lighting techniques on the spot to shoot items that were extremely difficult to photograph beautifully under any conditions. We delivered 14 images in two days.
Although the lighting was complex this giant lathing machine did not represent the challenge that the following image did. Mostly through post production and multiple light sources.
The biggest problem to solve was how to photograph a small composite plate on a shiny silver background, in a tiny room with white walls in 30 minutes. Sigh..... The clients did not get my approach of stacking and blending composites until I sent them semi completed comps. They are very happy with me. Me too........
There was no way to photograph this composite mold for a rocket part in one take because of the time restrictions we had. Multiple blended an composted images went into creating this images to show off the beauty of the form.
