The Void - Asperger's Syndrome

The Void
There are many realities not just the one we experience. There is an entire spectrum of them. Some have been organised into what is known as the Autistic Spectrum. This installation aims to make sense of a specific angle of experiences within this spectrum called Asperger’s syndrome.

The main feature of the void is the large 5x10 CRT screen grid on a vertical wall. These screens project an image of an individual with Asperger’s syndrome. There are 3 separate clips of 3 different people which run on a loop. They talk about day to day problems which occur with their condition.

Like many pre-digital large screen displays, the small screens build up a large picture when placed together, but some parts of the image are lost. This is a reminder of flawed past technologies where certain details are lost in its lower quality. This links to the idea that Asperger’s sufferers lose ‘vital’ information from peoples tone of voice and body language. With this lost information, they find it more difficult to empathise with others.

The distortions on screen represent the ‘sight’ of someone with Asperger’s syndrome. By having this in front of viewers the hope is that they will empathise with them better after viewing their issues first hand. Each screen on the grid will react differently, which allows certain facial features and body gestures to be disguised without effecting other areas. The screens will ‘decay’ in different ways, including white noise and lines across the screen. This distortion will make the person’s emotions harder to read in different screens depending on what it is covering up. At times some screens will completely cut out. The sound will distort in relation to this with a variety of crackling or hissing noises. From time to time it will also cut out
