Waysys - wayfinding design system
The project, started initially as a Master’s Degree Project for the University of Arts and Design (UNARTE) and coordinated by prof. Dinu Dumbrăvician,
consists of a way-finding system for the Clinical Emergency Hospital in Craiova. This particular system offers a faster solution for visitors, patients,
as well as staff members, to get their right way around the hospital ground.
In this context, problems related to directional orientation are due to various factors: the hospital's complexity, the numerous compartments and
sub-compartments on different floors, and the existing medical & administrative hierarchy.
The project is based on and wishes to highlight flexibility, clarity and a fast channel of transmitting information. The system offers workability,
is easy to maintain and offers an optimal traffic diagram. Due to its design, the present orientation system can be adopted and applied
by any type of hospital, no matter the size and complexity. As such, it can be extended and implemented in other hospitals.
The Emergency Clinical Hospital from Craiova was opened on 10th of December 1970 and is one of the most important state medical centers in Romania.
It provides emergency care for more than 350.000 residents in Craiova, communes and villages in the Dolj County and also for the surrounding counties.
The Hospital has 1620 beds in 12 wards, disposed on 10 storeys, which covers a broad spectrum of specialties. The Emergency Unit is one of the biggest
in the country and has all the equipment for emergency treatment.
This hospital has entered into a program of modernization, through renovation and purchase of modern equipment.
Existing guidance system.
The project began by redesigning the hospital plans. For each floor in part I studied traffic routes and areas where congestion occurs. To solve these problems
I proposed a more efficient traffic diagram.
The next step was to develop an effective pictogram system.
