Problem:

The College's printed materials were unattractive, dated, and lacked consistent brand identity.
Solution:

I took the initiative to design new marketing pieces and reinforce a consistent brand image. I also introduced the use of video, social media, blogs, banners, formal invitations, and flyers to create a buzz around the events I was responsible for planning.
Process:

I met with the leader of each project to discuss the expected outcome. I learned about the audience through focus groups, asking a small group of students questions to find out what they were receptive to so I could formulate an effective communications strategy. With each project, as the audience changed, I would revisit this process.

I self-brainstormed ideas and created design solutions. In order to work on designs, I had to take time to go across campus to a computer lab that had Adobe Creative Suite. Design wasn't part of my job description. I was assisting seven Deans at the school, but I felt that it was important. The more design improvements I did, the more I was noticed and asked to help with additional design projects.

Once a design was completed, I requested feedback from the leader, and made adjustments accordingly.
I led the University’s Marketing and Communications Department on the creation of their incoming freshman catalogue. I continued to work on updates for subsequent editions, as well as other frerlance design projects once I left my full-time position at the University. Later, the University used a variation of my design on other widely distributed materials.
Outcome:

University leaders took note of my work, valued my opinion, and requested that I create solutions for them and redesign existing media. I created design solutions that were modern, and carefully selected images to influence current and prospective students to attend events and apply to the university.

The head of the College requested that I create the program and tickets for the Recognition Ceremony, the College's version of graduation.

The Director of Communications for the school took note of my work and requested that I collaborate with her on the College’s website including navigation and photo choices, as well as other projects.

Since they realized the importance of a maintaining a consistent brand identity and recognized my excellent work product, they ordered an iMac so that I could more efficiently design items in-house.
