TERMINAL TOPOLANY
Master's Degree Diploma project
by Jakub Charkiewicz (architecture/illustration/CG)

FUNCTION: airport terminal
SIZE: ~8100 m2
DATE: 12.11.2014
LOCATION: Topolany / Białystok, Poland (gmaps)

Aim of the diploma project was both to choose the task and to complete it during the academic year.
The idea of building an airport for Podlachia region of Poland had actually been an issue for few years, before it was finally dismissed (during the time I was working on this project). Local government produced extensive document, which included market analysis and prognostic data, aswell as the airport site project.
IDEA

Desire to conquer the skies for many years has been humanity final frontier. Since the Wright's first airplane take off in early XVIII century, flying industry holds its position as one of the fastest developing branch of technology and industry. Airport has become an important element of city and region development, providing both chances and treats due to it's size and service density.
Thus, my main ideas were to expose aviation phenomenon at its best, without overwhelming local societies as they provide manpower and make such object work properly for many years.

FORM

Look of the project reminds a landform.
Popular approach is to design terminal that looks light and windy, making observer think it's lighter and thiner, then it actually is.
I decided to turn this approach around. The marvel of aviation is the ability to beat the gravity. Take off and landing processes are most disturbing stages, that prelude and conclude the flight experience. Therefore, my approach is to emphasize those moments by setting together heavy look of the terrain with ease and lightness of skies and aircrafts.

PLAN

Interior area of the building is planned in linear manner, with airport facilities located in the central part. Circular, centripetal courts allow separation of passengers flow and consumption/waiting areas. Baggage handling system is slightly overdesigned (too large), since it is the hardest part to rebuild in the future. Linear distribution of function is transparent and easy to identify for a visitor.
GRAPHIC DESIGN

Visual information design is important part of terminal design. It determines the object recognisability and its level of service.
