Pyro

 

Two years ago, parts of our local woods were severely damaged by arson-set fires. With mixed feelings of disbelief and curiosity, I often wandered in the silent, scorched woodland, looking for signs of life.

But there was no life left.

 

The pain and anger I felt did not allow me to take any satisfactory pictures. I realised I did not wish to document the destruction I was witnessing right then. What I wanted to achieve was instead an iconic representation, totally separated from the emotion associated with that particular event.

 

So, when working on “Pyro”, I removed all sources of distraction. I worked in absolute silence and complete darkness.The small embers suggest imminent destruction, and yet their primeval warmth also makes them a symbol of future regeneration.

 

 

 

Due anni fa i boschi della mia regione sono stati profondamente feriti da violenti incendi dolosi. Lo stupore e la curiosità mi hanno portato a vagabondare nel silenzio della terra bruciata a cercare i segni della vita che non c'è più.

 

Conciliare il dolore e la rabbia per la distruzione del territorio rendono difficile creare delle immagini che mi soddisfino. Quello che cerco non è mai una documentazione dell'evento ma una sua rappresentazione iconica e separata dall'emozione del momento.

 

Nel mio lavoro Pyro ho eliminato le distrazioni, ho lavorato nel silenzio e nel buio della creazione. Il prodromo della distruzione che rappresenta la piccola brace è accompagnata da un calore primordiale, forse è un segno della nostra futura rinascita.
