HI TEA - Hibiscus Tea Branding and Packaging

THE PROJECT

Package and present a new food product

Third-year students from the Department of Food Technology at the University of Johannesburg are required to create a new food product. Design students will meet and work with the Food technology students to brand and package the product. Although each student will create a different food product, they each have similar design needs. These are:
- Designing a name for the product
- Designing the packaging
- Designing material that presents the new product in a display

Design process

- Meet with the client and write up a detailed brief, undertake market research and define the key problems, targets, and objectives
- Conceptualises and presents visual solutions
- Presents final mock ups for the packaging
- Research and ascertain costs of packaging and presentation material

THE PRODUCT

Hi Tea - Hibiscus Tea sweetened with Stevia

Hibiscus tea is a tisane or “herbal tea” consumed both hot and cold by people around the world. The drink is an infusion made from crimson or deep magenta-coloured petals of the Hibiscus Sabdariffa flower. Hibiscus tea has a tart, cranberry-like flavour. The tea is high in antioxidants and contains vitamin C and minerals. It is also used traditionally as a mild medicine.

THE BIG IDEA

Plant your packaging.

The promotional box is made out of seed paper - seed paper is biodegradable and grows into wild flowers and other plants when planted. The holder for the tea bags is a seed tray and the tea bags have been specially designed to fit. The promotional pack includes Hibiscus seeds, an instruction booklet and a label for the garden. Every aspect of this product has been considered and designed to be recycled.
GROW YOUR OWN HIBISCUS

This packaging has been specially designed to convert into a pot plant to grow your own Hibiscus. Once you have finished the tea, plant the seeds (included in the sachet) in the seedling tray and enjoy the pleasure of growing your own Hibiscus. The packaging is made out of seed paper, which grows into wild flowers when planted. The sachet includes seeds, growing instructions, and a label for your garden.
