“I am an optimist – but about nothing.” so Francis Bacon in einem Gespräch mit dem englischen Journalisten Melvyn Bragg. Das klingt für die Einen nach Gleichgültigkeit, für die Anderen nach absoluter Freiheit. Es ging um Chancen! Chancen haben seine Karriere begleitet und sein Leben bestimmt. Vom armen unausgebildeten Maler, der in den späten dreißiger Jahren aus Mangel an Geld auch die Rückseiten seiner Leinwände bemalte – und dies zu seinem Markenzeichen machte – bis hin zur Top 10 der teuersten lebenden Maler der Welt. Chancen waren für den spielsüchtigen Bacon die Essenz des Lebens, die Essenz, die große Dinge hervorbringen konnte.
Francis Bacon – ohne Zweifel einer der wichtigsten Maler des 20. Jahrhunderts. So wichtig, dass sich ein Team von Restauratoren, Archäologen und Kuratoren damit beschäftigte ,nach seinem Tod mehr als 7.000 Einzelstücke des ehemaligen Studios in Reece Mews Nr. 7, South Kensington, London abzubauen, zu katalogisieren und originalgetreu in der Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane wieder aufzubauen. So wichtig, dass 2013 sein Gemälde “Three studies of Lucien Freud” für 142 Millionen Dollar an die Königsfamilie von Quatar verkauft wurde und somit zum teuersten jemals öffentlich verkauftem Bild in der Kunstgeschichte avancierte.
Nun – das sind nur Zahlen und Fakten. Auf der einen Seite die Akademiker mit historischem Anspruch und touristischem Kalkül, auf der anderen Seite die Superreichen mit dem Faible für Kulturaufrüstung. Diese Extreme können kaum belegen, geschweige denn erkennen lassen, warum Francis Bacon einen immer noch so umfassenden Einfluss auf viele junge Künstler ausübt. War es sein obsessiver Lebensstil, geprägt vom Drahtseilakt zwischen monastischer Hingabe und ungezügeltem Hedonismus? War es sein Talent und seine Ausdauer, trotz der fehlenden akademischen Ausbildung, der vielen Rückschläge und der Sucht seiner wahren Leidenschaft pedantisch zu folgen? Oder war es seine Arbeitsweise im Umgang mit Inspiration und Ressourcen, die doch schon so viel Ähnlichkeit mit der überbordenden Bilderwelt unserer heutigen Zeit aufzeigte?

Francis Bacon – in a conversation with the English journalist Melvyn Bragg – was once quoted saying: “I am an optimist – but about nothing.” To some, this may sound like sheer indifference. To others it sounds like complete freedom. For Francis Bacon however, it was about chance and opportunity – two things which both accompanied his life and determined it. Francis Bacon went from a rather poor and unskilled painter – one whom had to paint on the back side of his canvases because he could not afford to buy new canvases to draw on – to one of the most notable artists in history. Bacon recognized from early on that risks and chance were at the very essence of his gambling life; and that chance could lead to immense accomplishments.
Francis Bacon is without a doubt, one of the most notorious artists of the 20th century.So notable in fact, that it took a sizeable team of archeologists, curators and art restorers to disassemble catalog and reinstate more than 7,000 pieces of art from Bacon’s former studio in Reece Mews Nr. 7 South Kensington London to its new home in the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin City.
So notable, that his painting “Three Studies of Lucien Freud” sold for 142 Million Dollars in 2013; making it the most expensive piece of art to ever be sold in the public domain.These are however just facts and figures. On the one hand, there are intellectuals and academics with an appreciation for the wonders of art and art history . On the other hand, there are the nouveau riche, on a mission to lay the foundation for a cultural future. These two extremes cannot begin to explain, let alone prove, how and why Francis Bacon continues to exert such a strong influence on young artists today.
“Virtue of Fools” aims at finding the answer to this question. Was it his obsessive lifestyle, shaped by a balancing act between monastic devotion and unbridled hedonism? Was it his extreme and unique talent which did not result from any sense of formal education? Or was it his endurance to succeed regardless of numerous setbacks? Was it his pedantic addiction to pursue his passions, or the way he was inspired to deal with the resources available to him: ones which have an uncanny similarity to the exuberant world of imagery we are familiar with today.
“Virtue of fools” – the current art exhibition in the INTOXICATED DEMONS Gallery. Curated by Marco Schwalbe, and in collaboration with 21 selected artists, this exhibition aims to answer these questions through a high-level line up of young international and contemporary artwork.
