These illustrations were commissioned for a story called "Gifts of Foes" for a literary issue of Russian magazine "SNOB". The trick in the main illustration is that if you turn the page over, the faces turn from evil smile to being offended - same faces, but look different if turned topsy-turvy. Like this:
