The novel 1Q84 explores a parallel universe in Tokyo as the hero and heroine of the story, Tengo and Aomame, seek to find one another and to understand their new world. A writer and an assassin, the two characters are connected by their past, a mysterious religious cult, and their provocation of cosmic forces. The book also features a cryptic young girl and a wealthy dowager, who both serve to involve Tengo and Aomame in activities against the powerful religious cult. Throughout the novel, the characters notice the strangeness of their surroundings, including the existence of two moons, which signifies their presence in 1Q84.

A well-known contemporary author, Haruki Murakami published 1Q84 in 2013, and it has since sold millions of copies in Japan and worldwide. The work was originally published in three volumes but was collected in one, 925-page text for American readers.
