tribute #4: PEAKY BLINDERS

MY NAME IS THOMAS SHELBY
And today, I'm going to kill a man.

-

With these words begins Peaky Blinders' season finale (2x06).

It's a period drama depicting the story of a brummie gangster family, the Shelbys, and their rise during the early Twenties.
Aired on BBC Two, the show is one of the best written I've seen lately. It's built with care and attention for every single detail, it's visually stunning and the story structure is coherent and without flaws or slow moments.
The characters constantly grow, with the perfect music score in the air around them.
The Epsom Derby is the peak of tension of a two-season-long climax. But, despite the tight and strong pace of the crime-action genre, every character has time for his glass of irish whisky and his own personal moment of clarity.

They all have time to breathe.

It's the kind of breathe that Polly has when she leaves with a poppy shaped blood stain on her jacket.
The one that Lizzy has while writing with chalk under her shoe.
The one that Mr Sabini has when his plans go south.
The one Alfred has when he fights.
The one that Thomas Shelby - the put together Thomas Shelby - has before bursting out and regain calm shortly after.
When Thomas shouts "I nearly got everything", he gives us the key for the entire season:

they all breath in bitter anger.
