Object Transform Poster Series

This series of posters was created for an imaginary type conference at the Walker Art Center called “Object Transform.” These posters are inspired by the work of Luna Maurer, who designs “fungus” projects using logic-based design. For each project, Maurer designs a set of simple shapes, a set of simple rules, and picks a location. The shapes are printed on sticker paper in large quantities, along with the set of rules, and are then handed to people that participate in the project. Maurer invites the public to participate in her projects, and wants to inspire everyone to be creative.

For my series of posters, I created my own fungus project by designing shapes and writing a set of rules. Friends, family, teammates, classmates, and professors applied these shapes directly to my posters according to my set of rules. Half of the text was printed on the posters before the stickers were applied, and the other half was applied after the fungus project was complete.
Experimenting with shapes.
I used my initials as inspiration for my final shapes - a hidden personal touch.
Experimenting with different sizes before making the actual stickers.
Printing part of the text before application of the stickers. This text served as a source of structure and continuity between all three posters.
Cutting the final stickers out of vinyl, and weeding each set individually.
3 posters, 3 sets of shapes, 1 set of rules.
I placed the first set of stickers on each poster and let participants grow the project from there.
A few of the many people that helped bring my project to life. Each person was allowed only one set of three stickers per poster (three posters total).
After the poster area was full, I hand-stamped the rest of the lettering onto the posters using rubber stamps and an ink pad. The arrangement of the remaining type was completely influenced by the resulting flow of the fungus projects.
An interesting effect of the 3 fungus patterns layered together.

(The forms were vectorized and layerd digitally in the above poster)
