This is my final project for my Freshmen year Wintersession course, called "Where It Lives." It was a course in the Furniture Design department--the objective of the course was to design furnitures that integrates into the selected environment. I made this coffee rest in concrete to match the environment I have chosen, which is a small pathway between RISD Carr Haus and RISD Freshmen Building (the Waterman Building). Due to practical issues of transferring the piece to the location, I had put the coffee rest in the Market Place near the RISD Auditorium. The piece is in a way both sculptural and practical; I chose to use concrete to challenge myself with using new materials. I used various types of leaves to leave imprints to the coffee rest (the holes on the side of the rest) and added a tree branch to match the natural setting of the pathway.

These images show the process of building the coffee rest, from building the mold to casting.

I added a foam block into the concrete so that it will alleviate the weight of the concrete piece.
