The band Los Kjarkas was founded in 1965 in Capinota in department of Cochabamba (where today a little museum dedicated to the band stands), by brothers Hermosa: Wilson, Castel and Gonzalo, and Édgar Villarroel. They began to impose a different style, a new way of interpreting the great Bolivian traditional music, at that time played only on Carnivals and overshadowed by foreign rhythms. The name of the band has its origin in Quechua language, where ‘kharka‘ means an instrument that needs to be tuned or, as my dear friend Ester said, ‘temblor‘ – an earthquake. I actually prefer the second meaning as Los Kjarkas, after playng at small local festivals, became national and international sensation, that shook the world of music. In the 80’s band became popular not only in all South America, but also in US, Australia, Europe and Japan, touring the biggest folk stages in the world. With the passing of the years the band crew has changed and it have incorporated several other members as Elmer and Ulises Hermosa, Gaston Guardia, Francisco Hurtado, Braulio Sanchez to name a few. The new millennium brought other important changes in Los Kjarkas as the group was rejuvenated with other young artists: Gonzalo Hermosa Jr., Lin Angulo and… Japanese Makoto Shishido. Who are Los Kjarkas?
Well, everybody in the world knows at least one of their songs, Llorado se fue. No? What if I tell you, that this catchy melody was stolen by another band and named commonly as Lambada. Now we're talking!

I have been lucky to enjoy the concert of the best Bolivian folk band for the second time in Sonilum, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia (06/11/2014).  What a great show that was!
