PERFUME OF MEMORIES

As a foreigner in U.S.A, I have nostalgia for people who are in Korea. I miss conversations I did with them, moments I hung out with them, and smells of them. Keeping a person’s scent is same with keeping that person. It is a kind of collection of people. By making their fragrances into candles and being surrounded by the candles, finally, I am surrounded by friends, I smell them, and be with them.

I remember and collect smells of my dears and make them to candles. Scents, which my sense remembers, become an actual thing. Something that is familiar, exists, tangible, can be seen, and can be smelled. Not simply collecting, but making new with collected things and then collecting them again. Meaning of them doesn’t change even though shape changed. They don’t replace their owners (my friends), but they become their owner themselves as I gave them meaning.

Based on my personal story, getting out of my own established work style was an additory task. Perfume, wax, plywood, and decorating an installation room were all fresh material. Nostalgia, which is my concept became a reality into a practical substance, candles. In a way that it is not valid only for the assignment, but smerge deep into my daily life, it is valuable enough.
