The Love Story of My Parents

This project is about my parents' love story. Before they met each other, my father grew up in Johor and came to Penang Island for a job opportunity. He was a lonely person when he was in Penang. He did most of the things on his own. He could buy anything he wanted without considering anyone and also loves to read books. My mother on the other hand was from Kedah. After my grandfather passed away, my grandmother took her and her siblings to Penang while she was still a baby. As she slowly grew up, she started to help some house chores and run some errands for the family, cycles to the market to buy goods and cooks for the family.

It so happen that my mother started to work in the same factory as my father. One day, they went for a beach outing with some other colleagues. Out of the blue, it started to rain, by taking this opportunity; my father went with an umbrella and shelters my mother. This was the first time when they met, which is on the year 1982. They got married two years later.

Today, they have three daughters and a son (including me), happily living together.

For this project, the illustrations are in triangular form, this is because each triangle is the sides of an umbrella, which I had built for installation (too bad I did not take a picture of it). For this installation, I've printed out the old pictures of my parents, me and my siblings and cut them out to form a droplet shape for each picture before attaching them with string and hung it around the umbrella.
1982, the first encounter.
Him, the nerdy.
Her, the errand girl.
Them, the sweet couple.
2011, the Tan family.
