Scary Go Round - The Animated Version

Motion Graphics
In October of 2013 I won the MODO Halloween Contest with my image “Halloween Circus”.
My initial idea for the contest was to do an animated Merry Go Round but with scary characters instead of cute horses and stuff. But to animate you need a LOT of time and some kind of script.

After the competition I promised to do an animated version. Why I don’t know but it has been great fun and I’ve learned a lot during the process. Someone on a Sweden Modo User Group meeting last year come up with the name “Scary Go Round”, sadly I can’t remember who.

The biggest problem was to figure out what to do, why I should animate it. And I can’t say that it’s a movie even now, more like a Turntable Deluxe ;)

But I have learned MARI, and I have been able to use NUKE a lot.

Softwares and Workflow:
All base modelling in MODO.
Rendering using MODO. All scenes saved as EXR 16-bit with multiple outputs; Color, Multiple Alpha channels depending on the scene, Depth and Motion Vectors.
The EXR-files where then comped in NUKE. Lovely DOF and motion blur. I also added some lens distortion in NUKE.
The head of the Clown with the spinning eyes in the beginning and the Smiling Clown where textured in MARI with UDIMs created in MODO. Both heads have 10 4K texture maps applied each. Overkill I know, but I wanted to try. You can get really, really close with the camera ;)
The textures in all the other scenes and the Characters in the Scary Go Round where all done in MODO.
HighRes displacement sculpting on two of the characters where done in ZBrush.
The second scene is a camera projected image from Shutterstock on a mesh created in MODO. Final adjustment to this texture where done in Photoshop.
I baked all textures and lights in the scene with the stairs and had the render time down to 20 seconds/frame. Just to as a test. Worked well.
All scenes from NUKE was rendered in Color and saved as ProRes and the final edit is done in AE.
The dust particles and lens flares are also done in After Effects with the help of the excellent new AfterFX IO Kit.
Original music and sound effects by Charles Clayton. Sounds from Videocopilot where used on the Credit scene.
Credit scene graphics done in Illustrator and Photoshop.
