The competition was not about designing just an Emergency Department, it was about gaining an understanding of the most complicated social system humans have ever developed.  The competition was also about exploring how we, as architects, might help simplify the dichotomy.

As a team, we designed an Emergency Department that would serve as a Level 1 Trauma and Burn Center as well as have the capability to increase patient intake by 200% in the event of a mass casualty event.

Healthcare design models, specifically the Plaintree Model, were utilized in patient room and spacial layout.

Nursing Station Layout Theory and Plan

Staff spaces are off stage so patient do not enter the exam room from the staffs workspace in the Emergency Department.  This layout allows staff to function productively without interruption and patients do not see what is occurring behind the scenes while allowing patient and staff privacy when necessary, but direct access to the patient room from the visitor area and the staff area simultaneously.  This delineation of spaces reinforces the Plaintree Models concept of onstage and offstage spaces and functions.

Nursing Station
The hospital healing Environment is a critical part of the design.  It is important to patients, visitors, and hospital staff.  Natural colors, woods, and patterned glass in addition to images of nature are used at material and art throughout the Emergency Department to reinforce the feeling of well-being.
